What is Coaching?

No, we are not talking about learning to coach your child’s soccer of baseball team. Professional coaching (also called executive coaching or life coaching) refers to the process of using an action-oriented, positive psychology approach to help clients move from where they are toward their goals and potential.

Coaching differs from psychotherapy because it does not diagnose or treat mental health problems, or focus on healing dysfunction. Coaching supporst personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific goals linked to personal or professional success. Coaching is furture focused. Those who undertake coaching can expect improvement in productivity, satisfaction wiht life and work, and the attainment of relevant goals.

Some typical reasons to work with a coach:

  • Something urgent or exciting is at stake (a challenge, stretch goal or opportunity)
  • Learning about one’s blind spots, social or professional faux pas, ‘de-railers’, and increasing emotional intelligence
  • A gap exists in knowledge, skills, confidence or resources
  • A lack of clarity with choices to be made
  • Success has started to become problematic
  • Work and life are out of balance, creating unwanted consequences
  • Core strengths need to be identified, along with how to best leverage them.
